I got a crew job on a H18 for the North americans, any tips on best practices?

Fill yourself with helium :D The boat is much faster with less weight.

1 Do what the skipper tells you to do.
2 Call out wind shifts, suggest lay lines, keep an eye open for traffic.
3 Make the uncleating/feeding/recleating of the jib sheet as smoooooooth as possible during tacks. Keep that air flowing over the jib.
(If you've ever seen Rick White's DVD, they do an excellent job of it.)
4 Try and 'focus' the weight in one spot to avoid hobby horsing of the hulls.
5 Keep the weight as far forward as is safe.
6 Help the skipper keep the mainsheet tidy and on board.
7 At all times, maintain your sense of humour and seamanship.
8 Carry a rabbit's foot or similar good luck charm.

Good luck....and enjoy
