Saw a Flying Scot with a pocket sewn into the top section of his main with a slab of closed cell foam about 2- 2.5 in thick tucked into it used as a mast float....anyone ever seen this used on a catamaran and do you think it is worth considering ?? Dj

That system completely destroys the sail area for use as power and requires that the entire area be submerged to effectively use the flotation. By then the mast head is well under and the upper hull further over center and then bearing its weight down on the flotation even more.

By far, the Hobie Bob floats are superior in effective flotation volume where most effective... at the mast tip. And with least impact on sail area / power... completely unaffected. A bob float is less surface area / drag than a small poodle carried aboard and more aerodynamic.

And a lot easier to keep attached to the top of the mast than the poodle!

And the smaller poodles don't even float.

I used one on a Johnston 18 sail boat in MN. It was well built and kept some shape on the upper part of the sail. It came down about 2 feet from the top. Never seen it in action though, my uncle said it was only to prevent turtles.
