Need some insight, this sail came with my H18 but has lines or do I have any idea on set up. Thought was a spinnaker but has no attachments for retrieval lines. Sail measures 25ft by 16ft by 23ft. Mast does have extra tang 1/2 way up comp tip. Thoughts?

Original H18SX spinnaker would be my guess. It would be much lower aspect ratio and fuller cut than a modern spinnaker. It also would have been launched from a bag tied to the tramp, so no snuffer or retrieval lines.

Thanks srm. Might be what the two small blocks attached wuth shacles to the inside lip of hull decks under the front cross member are part of then.

The H18SX didn't have a snuffer system? I can't imagine what a cluttered mess the trampoline would be as the crew tries to douse a spinnaker and stuff it into a sail bag before rounding the mark!

The snuffer system must truly have been a marvelous innovation after all that! I wonder what the next big one will be for cats... roller furling spinnakers, perhaps? :D

I've never sailed a cat with a spinnaker before, but I'm surprised at how full that one is. Seems like it'd probably have more drag, but I have to imagine that the 18 would be an absolute rocket with all that extra sail area!

Hawk592, did your boat come with a spinnaker pole, bridles, etc. for a spinnaker setup? Seems like those would be near impossible to find for an 18SX if you don't have them...

It did not. The extra tang on the mast comptip and the actual sail are the only things I have for it. I'm revisiting the idea of making it useable... or just passing it on to someone who will use it. Seems a bit daunting for someone who mainly solos.

I think most people running a spinnaker on an 18 these days have pieced together custom pole setups, which aren't too hard to put together. Windsurfer masts work for poles, and bridles can be made from spectra/vectran.

Just out of curiosity here... I have an H18Sx with the taller mast. My Q: has anyone tried a standard H18 sail suit on this mast? If so, how did it work out? My sails are stock and looking at getting another sail suit for it for everyday use and there are many 18 sets out there but very few to nil on SX sets. You have one, let me know. You tried the hybrid set up or use it currently, give me a shout please. Thanks.

I saw one, once. Obviously, the regular 18 main is shorter than the SX main. This poses a problem. Either the foot (and also the boom) have to ride higher than normal, or the head has to ride lower than normal. Since the gooseneck is not easily moved, the rig I saw chose to have the head of the sail not reach the top of the mast. He solved this issue by running a short piece of line from the halyard ring to the grommet in the head of the sail. Gave it the look of a slightly reefed main. I have no idea how well it sailed.

I think he posts on here as rrr0283

Thanks for the reply Jim, that's kind of what I was thinking. I was wondering about raising the gooseneck to fit it and not lose any sail area up top. There's just so many more sails on the used market for H18 than the SX.

Spinnakers... the early spinnakers (like this one) were cut very full.
You can easily adapt the Tiger Spin set up (spin pole, etc) to a H18, and the flatter cut spin.

email me off line at lunnjohn dot magma dot ca... I have pictures, and we can chat about drilling into the mast track,
about creating a bail, about Amsteel, 57 mm blocks, cissy blocks, mid-pole snuffers, retrieval lines,
and most of all, about flying when the spin kicks in. What a rush....

My overall recommendation is that you either get that spin recut or switch to a Tiger style spin.

Lots of pictures and PDF's sent....
and discussions how to sail with a spin.
We clocked over 20 knots downwind under spin this last Weds evening during club racing, scary fast.
That was before our capsize... ha ha...

Good used sails are sure hard to come by, specially H18SX sails.

Has anyone ever considered having a panel added to the bottom of used standard dacron sails to fit the SX? Put a nice window in it, glue the bolt rope end to end and put a patch over it. The old clew and downhaul grommet would just look like a reefing point. I've got a walking foot sewing machine, so I've been considering experimenting with such things... I have no idea what a sailmaker would think, but it would have to be cheaper than new SX sails for those of us on shoestring budgets.

Interesting idea. If you do try it just make sure you include a panel having a bottom pocket for an additional batten at the new "foot" of the sail.
