I got some advice over the weekend to scale back on the idea of getting a "cool" set of sails while I am still learning to race.

The recommendation is to get a set of plain wht practice sails.

I have reluctantly agreed, so where should I get the sails from?

I have looked at Whirlwind, SLO, and Beachcat Sail Co.

Old sails are original mylar = totally delaminated and worthless. I might cut them up and use them for the snuffer sock.

I have an SX, too, and when the sails needed replacing I converted the boat to a standard 18 to be class legal for Hobie events. I now have two rigs with new sails - an 18 with Hobie sails and an 18SX with Whirlwind sails. If this is not possible for you, or you race open class or portsmouth, then before getting white SX sails consider how serious you are about racing. If racing isn't your thing then you would want the colored sails you want. If Hobie sanctioned racing does become your thing then you'll probably want to convert the boat anyway since the one-design SX racing class really doesn't exist.

As for the advice given about practice sails, it's good advice, but mostly for competitive racers in competitive classes. If racing is to be an occasional thing then get the SX sails you want.

One thing I have noticed, if you convert your boat, is that a new jib improves the boat's performance much more than a new main, so if you want to save a buck then you can get away with racing with an older main and a new jib.
