I have a choice, try and repair this tear or replace the tramp. If I repair, then I can order new sails from Whirlwind.

How do I repair the tramp in this area? Starboard rear corner.

Hmmm maybe take it to a specialist with a heavy duty machine and have some seatbelt webbing sewn in? Alternatively, for more of a short term fix, install grommets on each side and wrap some thin non-stretch line through the grommets to keep the hole from growing.

Webbing or dacron sail cloth patches on top and bottom with the tramp sandwiched in between. Either hand stitch (zig zag) or find someone with a decent sewing machine. That's about the only way I can think to repair it. I've done grommet repairs by hand stitching webbing to the tramp and they've held up fine, just takes a while.

I think I will go with the grommet repair; that way I can buy new sails this year, and then go with a new tramp next year.

I am leaning towards Whirlwind Square top SuperR, and a bias tramp from SLO - any opinions?

thanks

Personally, I'm not sold on the bias cut tramps. My buddy has a mesh Slo tramp on his H18 and it's well-made, but he went with the standard cut, not the bias cut. The center lacing is critical in ensuring a tight tramp in my opinion.

Good to know, I was leaning toward bias but maybe I will rethink that one.

Today I have a friend who is going to install the grommets on the tramp.

This is what I have on my H17. I am happy with both and the wife now preferes sivler-gray Pentex over a colored sail.

I love my custom square top Pentex from Chip at Whirlwind, although I had to re-learn how to sail
as my old mylars were over 20 years old and blown out.

Email me off line and I'll send you pictures....next week.

Tramp - go OEM for tightness, (or get used) and go SloSail for price.

Repair, I made a sandwich of some sailcloth (dacron) with epoxy in the middle at those weak points.
So far, so good.
