My wifes favorite (she thinks the pink is too girly....go figure?)

I am removing all decals and I am buffing out the hull oxidation, so I will get new vinyl to match the sails.

The yellow and blue are a very nice color combination...good choose. :)

One of my concerns is the ability to see the tell tales.

Someone suggested that I invert the colors and that way I will have a lighter color on the leading edge.

Snowsail, Did you end up getting new sails for your SX? I just picked up an '89 SX with original sails. Looking at getting a new or newer suit for it and any advice you can provide would be great.

Thanks.

Snowsail, email me at lunnjohn 'at' magma 'dot' ca,
and I'll send you JPG's of my SX18 custom square top sails.

Be warned, you'll find you'll have to learn to sail all over again...
the newer sails are very different.
However, once you get used to them (particularly in high winds), you will FLY!

We can also talk about a spin.....

cheers

I have a blue & white "SuperR" main from Whirlwind sails i've been very happy with, but next sail will almost certainly be one of their squaretop mains for the added power.

I am stunned by the difference between what it looks like on the design webpage compared to what it looks like in the actual photo of the sail rigged on the boat....the blue has almost no resemblance to the blue online.. The real sail looks great..good job.....but minor variations in hue can ruin a color combination, this one is huge.... I am interested in buying a sail like this but I would be totally afraid that it might look so different than what I thought I was getting that I could be totally disappointed....I only have money to do this once...it has to be right. Even having small pieces of the material to be used doesn't help me visualize what the total sailplan will look like when built out. I am most interested in using a lot of yellow but it looks chartruese on my monitor...but hey..that blue looks like navy and it shows up as a really light blue in the real picture???

I just re-read this thread....PINK...where is the pink..If we are talking about the whirlwind site there isn't even any red, let alone pink, (only Yellow, orange, blue, white, grey and black) so once again I am lost. Is there another good place to buy these sails that I haven't found it yet??? Oh,please share if there is.....

Fastfriend,

What boat are you looking to replace sails on? Are you trying to recreate originals?

I have two hobie 18's one with SX wings and another with magnum wings...My "good" boat is a combination of several that I have had over the years...the hulls are 1990 replacements bought from a fellow racer after his were replaced by his insurance company, and my 87 hulls were damaged when my trailer crossbeam broke in a road construction area on my way to a regatta in Canada. He wanted to move on to racing Hobie miracles, and I wanted his new hulls. I bought another 18 to get back to a solid mast and yet another to get the SX wings.. I put together and sold the other boats and trailers to good advantage.
As a result of all my boat dealings, I have three sets of pretty nice stock sails.( yellow rainbow, pink rainbow and carumba) so I certainly don't "need" a sail ..I was just thinking I might like to play with a tri radial squaretop. ( Hey some guys spend more in a year than a new sail costs on greens fees and drivers or gasoline for their ski boat than a new sail costs)
For awhile there I only had 7 or 8 guys to sail with...but the Hobie numbers have at least tripled in the last 5 years at my lake, and they are a really nice bunch to hang around with. Since I am spending almost every decent weekend at the lake, I just figured that maybe I should up my game a little. Two or three of my friends have stock sails that are like 7 years old or less...one has a new squaretop on a 17S from Whirlwind and another just bought a brand new European "Hibiscus" sails that someone just imported a bunch of into this country....but they are only available for the 16's... I would have bought one of those in a heartbeat if they had been available for the 18..but now I wouldn't want to buy exactly what he has if I had another option.

FastFriend...
Spend some of that cash on a spinnaker for your SX18, you will really fly downwind once you get the hang of it.
You do have to have good crew or you will go swimming, or break a mast.
The Tiger setup converts quite nicely.
Email me off line if you need/want pictures etc.
