Post subject:  Suggestions for Improving the 7:1 Mainsheet System Upgrade?

I recently upgraded my 6:1 triple stack to 7:1 by adding a Harken Mini-Block and stand-up spring to the eye strap and then running the free end up to a spare boom bale as recommended in the Parts and Accessories guide. I am not entirely satisfied with the results. The problem is the mini-block doesn't swivel and thus doesn't stay aligned with the boom when I have the mainsheet system sheeted in hard and pointed towards the hull. Essentially, due to the twisting effect I don't feel like I'm getting anything out of this upgrade. If anything, it's more of a "downgrade" because it's become harder to cleat my main (which wants to point forward due to the torque). The problem is compounded when the wind is up. Any suggestions? I see a Swivel Shackle listed in the Connectors section of the guide but I'm concerned the clevis pins might not be ideal with the stand-up spring. Ronstan sells a similar shackle without the clevis pins (Part #183322)

Here's a picture of my setup....

Maybe try moving the forward boom bale back towards the center bale so the added purchase is more in line with the other six lines. This should reduce the amount that the bottom block wants to stay aligned with the boom (i.e., allow the bottom block to rotate more freely). Or replace the upper block with one you can tie off the mainsheet to rather than using a boom bale (the best are the hollow carbo blocks that allow you to pass the mainsheet through the triple and tie off with a figure 8 knot).

I still find myself quite satisfied with the stock system (bottom block is a single ratchet with a triple mounted on top, the upper block is a triple). The only thing I've done is tie the top block (boom block) so it can't swivel which can cause the system to get twisted up. Otherwise it runs great and is low profile enough for the 18 (no need for low profile blocks on the 18 IMO).

I appreciate the input, SM, thank you. I think I'm going to first try a swivel under the mini-block because I think that should take care of the problem (with the added swivel point my lower system should perform similar to your lower single/triple system I would think) and like you said, there's plenty of clearance between the upper and lower stack. If that doesn't work I'll look into either moving a bale or purchasing a different boom block.

I hats to say it but you need a new upper with Becket. I ran into the same problems you seem to be having. The problem is that the line terminates to a seperate point and that creates a "V" that wont let the stack swivel. Only thing I found to fix it was a new upper.
