In my experience and from what I've tried to get from others, when you dump the main, the top of the sail twists out, with some twist, you can open up to more power, but if you let out a bunch of main, the wind dumps off the top of the sail and past you, rather than the back of the sail propelling you forward. If you travel out all the way and keep the main tight or moderately tight, you maintain a better sail shape and go faster.
