Post subject:  What equipment do you carry?

I have never been on a cat before but I'm now the proud owner of a redline H18. I'm going to sail it for the first time this weekend in Mission Bay, San Diego (in case you want to avoid the area...or watch the show...)

What equipment is required to be on board in the sheltered bay? We will be wearing PFDs, a given. What else? Do you carry paddles, etc? Where do you stow them.

Thanks,
Carl

PFDs,
painter, (also useful if you capsize),
plus in Canada we are obliged to carry a 'buoyant heaving line of 15 metres',
paddle(s), (often tied off underneath the centre part of the tramp to the lacing lines that join the Left and right half, or in my case, underneath the wings),
whistle (unless you have one attached to your PFD),
spare parts/tool kit (mine is a small pouch with a Leatherman, some shackes, a Hobie tool, Micropore, electrical tape, and some line)
Sailing Gloves, and spray jackets.

In addition, you may wish to carry some oat sodas, a water bottle and some snacks.
When we go out on our own, especially in strong winds, I carry my cell phone in a Pelican case.
Last night, during Club racing, I carried my waterproof camera.

What do others carry?

Righting Line (and righting water bag if light on crew weight)
Compass if sailing offshore
VHF and/or cell phone
A couple spare shackles/pins & small pieces of line
Pliers / multi-tool / knife
Spray top or neoprene top in the hull
Bottle of water
Murrays telescoping paddle (trimmed down to 6" wide to fit thru port hole)

in addition to everything mentioned above:
-a pair of "throwable" type IV PFD/Cushions
-a length of Dyneema/Spectra

the throwable is a USCG requirement on boats over 16', and the spectra/dyneema can be used as a temporary lashing for almost anything that breaks- last week I wound up using it when my mainsheet shackle blew up right before a race.

Enjoy your new boat, the 18 is an absolute blast!

Go 18s! If you don't already have one or two, pickup one of the hull bags that go inside your hatches. I throw a spray top in there as well, some sort of waterproof snack bar, some water, multitools that are capable of helping free up a loose nut and bolt and tighten or loosen a shackle. Extra shackles and pins are always a good idea, I usually have at least one extra plug and a stainless knife with sailor's spike. I've also got some of that dynema as well. I usually have some of those 6'' bungy loops with balls on them wrapped around the boom or crossbar to help lash my throw line, righting line, or extra jackets to the tramp.

Get yourself hooked up with the Division 2 guys. There are at least a few other 18s in your area.

How do you keep your bag from sliding around in the hull?

There are a number of bags that are designed to fit in the hole, and not fall through.

I tied a line INSIDE my hull and AROUND the daggarboard trunk and put a clip on it...

nice to throw things in the hull and clip to that line

so depending where I'm going I toss in some fishing poles, a cast net, etc, etc...

paddle...
