About to reassemble my cat after a winter of rehab ( paint and delamination ) when installing the cross bars should any gasket or bedding compound be used? Thanks!

No, not necessary. But do use some anti-seize compound on the bolts.

I did this last year. Check the H18 assembly manual, http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_assets/H18%26SX_Manual.pdf, page 3. It says silicone should be used on the bolts. There is actually a rather large opening into the hull around the front inboard bolts. I don't see it in the manual, but I also agree with using anti-seize. The tricky part is inserting the bolt with anti-seize on the threads and silicone on the unthreaded portion without getting the two mixed up.

Don't know why the manual would say to use silicone. The bolt holes don't open up into the hull (shouldn't anyway). I have dis-assembled and re-assembled my 18s many times and never use silicone and the don't leak.

I agree with Jim. Silicone/caulk is not necessary. Anit-sezie on the threads is very important. We had an inboard bolt break once most likely because it didn't have anit-seize grease. I also like to put a flat washer under the outboard bolt heads between the bolt and the corner casting.

Be sure to check the bolts at least once after sailing the boat. They will likely need to be re-tightend as everything settles in.
