Hey all, I have the largest, ugliest mast bob on my newly acquired 18sx. Has to go. Anyone have any walk-through tips on sealing an 18sx comp tip mast to make sure it won't turtle? Or has anyone had success with mast pads on comptips? they certainly look a lot less conspicuous! Thanks! Phil |

Lots of discussion here in the forums on mast sealing, pads vs floats. Search mast flotation or similar. |

Like Matt said... Search around.. Pads are a lot less flotation than a Bob simply because of placement. Sealing a mast isn't that hard. Or expensive. On every old boat I have owned I ended up just drilling and refitting all the rivets hardware, and sealing the plugs with fresh silicone while I had it open. I wouldn't fly a bob just because with a sealed mast popping the boat up from turtle isn't a big deal, and often I have intentionally turtled just to take a break and pull it back up the direction I want to go. (I doubt there are many people who capsize more often than I do when playing around... heck last year I finished a race by purposefully flopping only the mast over the line. ) But I also often have a bit of mud on my sails.. |

Phil, I see you live in Brooklyn. Do you sail out of the Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club? If so, Steve Meyer and I will be there this weekend for the regatta. Come on down if you want to talk 18s. Jim Doty |

Jim, I'm jealous of you and Steve. I'll be up in L.I. sound at the Cedar Point OD regatta. Hopefully you'll have more than the 8 kts. of wind we're forecast for. Good Luck. |

Don't be too jealous, Chris. Steve is on a 17 and Barbie and I are on a 16. Jim |
