Post subject:  Hobie SX Mast question

I know the SX mast is taller, however I thought it was just a longer comp tip section. Is this true or is the mast below the hounds longer?
Also is the jib larger as well or same size as standard Hobie 18?

Thanks,

Everything's bigger!

longer shrouds, extrusion, tip, jib and main I believe. Little fuzzy on the extrusion, but I believe it's bigger too.

CompTip is the same as the standard 18. The extrusion is longer.

Sails are actually quite similar in total square footage.

They may be similar in square footage but you cannot hang an SX Main on a standard mast. You can run a standard main on an SX mast but it will look kind of funny. Batten lengths won't interchange very well. The Jibs are also different sizes and won't interchange.

To start at the beginning the comptips are the same. The bridals, furler and boom are the same. The mast extrusion shape is the same.

Here is how an SX is different.
The extrusion part of the mast is longer.
The diamond wire are longer.
The side shroud are longer
Upper forestay is shorter
Lower forestay is longer
Trap Wires are 5 inches longer
The Jib halyard both rope and wire are longer.

Corkguy Currently not disclosing how many 18's I have.

Aside from the differences in the mast and sails, this guide should give you an idea as to the difference in rigging lengths:

If anyone is interested I have an excellent SX mast with a very new set of all royal blue Dacron sails with brand new shrouds. It is in Louisiana, just North of New Orleans.

Thanks
Jim
