Routine maintenance - I am replacing my shroud anchor pins, and the nylock nuts seem fine.
SRM commented earlier that Hobie now uses an anchor bar # 5010 1701 in place of a nylock.

When did that change take place?

If I elect to keep the nylock, will we deform the shroud anchor plate?
Is this something that I need to order in 'rush' or 'routine'?
(We race once a week, so yes, this is more than social sailing.
SSW 6 knots at 22C, partly cloudy for tonight).

The specified nut was custom. No longer available. We now list the anchor bar as used on all other models.

I'm sure the nut was a weight savings... the bar works.

Thanks Matt, for your quick response.
I guess from an engineering perspective, the channel sure makes that joint stronger.

Will be ordering from Fogh Marine tonight.

Any idea what was special about the nut that required the use of a custom nut? Seems to me a 316SS nyloc nut would do the trick. Maybe just get a heavy hex nut for a little more strength and to fit the channel a little more tightly so it doesn't spin when tightning. The anchor bar seems a little overkill IMO. It's been pretty well established that the failure mode of the anchor is the neck of the bolt itself and not the nut or the threads.

Extra large / deep... more threads holding than a standard nut.

I'm note sure of the size, but could a standard nut backed by a nylock nut do the job? More threads would be available....

I would probably go with something like this. Just verify the width fits in the channel and install with some loctite.

there is something special about either the (original) nut or the shroud anchor pins. The nut that was listed in the catalog as supposedly fitting would bind on the anchor pin threads and destroy them.

Just something to check before you go buy/use a "stock" nut fro McMaster or similar.

I don't believe there is anything special about the anchor pin threads. To my knowledge they are 5/16"-18. This is a standard English thread pitch. It's possible the threads galled when you installed the nut causing it to seize to the pin. Or there was some debris left over on the threads from the manfacturing/machining process or you were cross threaded or they gave you the wrong nut (metric?). There is no reason a hex nut from mcmaster or elsewhere should not work. Maybe use a little lube on the threads to prevent galling and definitely do not force the threads if they bind. Its always a good idea to give the threads a quick visual inspection before installing a critical part.

The old catalogue needed to be updated, it listed the wrong nut (I think it was Part#8050321 which seized on the anchor pins). The correct nut is Part#8050311 5/16-18 NYLOCK. This is the exact same nut that comes with the rudder stiffening kit. Peace.

Not correct...

The (8050311 5/16-18 NYLOCK) nut is not to spec for depth. The original nut, as described by me earlier in this thread, was a heavy duty nut with more thread depth. That is why we decided to just list the anchor bar now... the original nut was no longer available. The anchor bar works great.

The original was NUT 5/16-18 NYLOCK HVY It did not seize... purposefully.

Hi Matt, In the past, before the bar was introduced for the 18, you steered us to part#8050311 (see link below. ). I took your advise and the part worked fine - no problems whasoever under fairly heavy use. The nut that seized on the pins, 8050321, did so because it was incorrectly labeled in the OLD catalogue. I know this because it cost me a headache and my dealer two shroud anchor pins. The old catalogue also lists the nut you recommended in the post linked below, 8050311, as the nut for your rudders I.e., the nut that comes (or at least used to come with) with the rudder stiffening kit. Where am I wrong?

We did not list the correct nut... the standard was all we had, but was not really what was designed for the boat.

The bar is the way to go, so correcting bad information that we gave.

No wonder I was confused.....
Glad the issue is resolved.
Parts on order.....

Post subject:  Re: Shroud Anchor Bar

Doing some cleanup on my 18, I notice that one of my sidestay/shroud anchor pins is a little loose, and the other just fine. Looking further into it, I see that the one that is loose is a bit smaller in body, though well-matched in threads, and the one that is tight has a nut with a bit larger/heavier body exactly fits the channel of the Hobie reinforcement plates, and that's what makes it tight.

Based on this thread, the factory-blessed attachment is now the anchor bar -- does this slot within the reinforcement plate or replace it entirely?

I'm not sure my boat minds either way, but I'd like it to be symmetrical in solution.
