Advice for over the hill H18

Hey guys, Well unfortunately I think its time to put down my 1982 H18. She's had numerous repairs, tangled with the zero turn, been left on the lake shore for a few years, and I'm thinking not worth the time and money to restore. The 2 biggest current problems:

1) the starboard rudder gudgeon has cracked thru again and is leaking water into the hull
2) the starboard hull has a rather large soft spot on the outer side from the bow to about half way to the front cross bar.(3-4 feet) It's still intact but would probably not survive rough seas or a direct hit to it.

Every piece of rope on the thing needs replaced or cleaned, the tramp has a 2 foot tear in one corner and the trailer needs tires, bearings, lights, etc....

I hate to just trash her or part out but not sure of any other viable options at this point. I only sail where I live and don't care about looks but right now she's not even functional. Also figured out she's not great for comfort especially the older I get. LOL

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Add up the cost and time of rehabbing and compare it to buying another 18 and see which is lower.

Hey Hilly, I've got a 1982 Hobie 18 which I've had to repair numerous times. One of the last "major" jobs was a soft spot on the starboard hull all the way from the front crossbem to about a half a meter in front of the rear crossbeam. I repaired this very successfully and the deck is probably stronger than original. Most of the halyards, trap wires, trap grips, outhaul bearings and ropes, Mainsheet and jibsheet, plus sails have been replaced because these are just bits and pieces that succumb to wear and tear. One daggerboard socket leaks a bit, but I've managed to fix that with a squirt of silicone. Point is, it's a great boat, and with a bit of TLC you can really keep it going for a while yet. Of course a new carbon 18 would be a blast, but I'm on a budget, like I guess you are, so yeah, give it a bit of thought. The trampoline can be replaced, they're not that expensive. If you need a tip for fixing a soft deck, givvus a yell. Cheers, Marty.
