I have an original Hobie vinyl tramp that is in great shape but the hiking straps have long ago ripped off. I need to make some straps that will work in the meantime. Any suggestions?

Can someone measure the length of their tramp from the front to the back where the lacing is?

Car safety belts. They work great. An auto upholstry shop can sew them on for you. They did it for me for my old h16 vinyl tramp for 20 bucks. Seatbelts were attained from a local junk-yard.

I was thinking that, or just nylon webbing. Not sure which would be more comfortable. Problem is, I would rather not remove the tramp to have it repaired as the boat is in Mexico.

What I was thinking was using webbing with buckles and clips for the ends, then using two rivets and a backing plate for the center. I'd use a backing plate and rivet through where the stitching still is which should minimize any ripping and I could use smaller holes than using a grommet.

Any thoughts?

I'm in the process of doing this right now on my '88 H-18.

I'm using 2" black webbing from West Marine, which is a little softer than seat belt material (my wife & daughter thank me).

I removed the vinyl backing pieces from under the tramp where the straps were oringinally sewn, removed all traces of the old stitching, and am resewing by hand through the original tramp stitching holes so as to not further weaken the tramp, using the patches again as backers underneath.

more time consuming, but it is being done with the tramp on the boat.
and I am worry free about weakening the tramp.

hope this helps.

I use stranded & waxed thread from a sail repair kit.

you can also use dental floss, doubled, in a pinch.

Well thanks again for all the help and suggestions. That was a PITA but I did get them sewn on. It will be a two weeks before I get to try them out but the straps seem solid.

I ordered 4 bobbin's of waxed thread but only ended up using one and maybe a quarter of another.
I didn't need the sailmakers palm and ditched it after the first try.
