| Post subject: | Mast Painting |
Hey... My mast has a lot of scratches and such and I figured it would be an easy repair to simply spray on some black paint over the whole thing. My question is what is the original coating? powder coat, paint?... A more simple question might be what kind of paint will bond to what is there and stand up to salt water. My mast is the old style (1976) if that makes a difference. If anyone has done this before I welcome any and all tips. thanks |

Your '76 mast is black already? Hum. I didn't realize they were black that early. Anyway, if you had a huge tank you could probably re-anodize-and-dye it black. Otherwise I'd sand it lightly to clear up the heavier scratches and maybe just hit it with a *thin* coat (or two) of epoxy appliance paint. Just be aware that wherever your wire halyards rub, the paint is going to come off awfully quickly. Good luck! |

Ooh tank Idea!!!!! Who has a tank 27 feet long really? Unless you have a swinnimg pool. MAKE ONE!! get some 6" or 8" pvc pipe. Glue a few legnths together to make it long enough, cap both ends. Rip it right down the middle with your sawsall. wahla!!! If its a penny for my thoughts and then I put my two cents in SOMBODY IS MAKEING A PENNY! Who? Hope it helps, --Chris |

I dunno if PVC would work because you have to use sulfuric acid and boiling water in different parts of the anodization process. I'm not sure if the acid would eat through the PVC or not. Also, I don't know how you'd fill an 8" x 27' tube with boiling water. 
It'd be sweet if somebody figured it out though! |

We just use a flat black spray paint to touch up the mast. It covers well enough, you can't hardly tell where you painted and when the halyard, stays or whatever rubs the paint off, you can spend another $1.99 at the Dollar General to get another can of paint. OR You spend a ton trying to re-powder coat. |
