Jim, When you repalced your mast base did you replace your mast step also? If not did or are you having any problems with the old mast step?

Ive been having the same problem with my 74 cat, I just replaced the mast base, and the old mast step needs to go with it. The older base doesnt allow for as much mast rake as the new, so when the mast leans back, it grinds on the step. I got my dremil out and ground down maybe 1/8" off the aft side of the mast base. But my problem is the part that stops the mast from over rotating isnt tall enough to accomodate the the new base, with the extra rake so the base goes right over the limiter and gets stuck. Check my post Mast Base = Mast Step there is a link to an article by MMiller about changing the mast step.

Thanks I have the article on repalcing the mast step. Which shrouds are you using? The old ones are longer I am aquiring a new mast with a comtip with the new mast base just wondering If I will need to repalce the mast step.

it depends, you should get some newer shrouds as they are shorter to allow for more mast rake, if you have the old hook style step, you might be allright...
The only reason I have to repalce my mast step, is that the mast rotator limiter on my step was worn out, giving a 60 or so degree angle so when the mast swung around instead of stopping it, the mast kind of rode up the side and got stuck. You will need to file it down some on the aft side of the mast step, but its not hard to do, a dremel, or a drill with a grinding bit will work.

Try it out before you go sailing, I didnt, and I was kicking my mast to get it out from getting stuck. If it works great! if not, prolly gonna have to repalce the step.

When you say "Jim," were you asking me? I haven't had any issues, but I'm not carrying enough rake to make that an issue. I can see where it could become one if I wanted more rake, but currently things are okay with an '04 base and '72 step. ;)

Thanks Jim, My 73 mast step works great with my newer mast Comptip. Ive been out alot since Feb I learn more every day. My boys are even siked about sailing, I think its flying the hull and launching them when I push it to hard. and the water here is still prety &%$# cold.

Thanks

Todd
