So, I am about to buy a Nacra 5.2 in very good 1976 condition. But, I had intended on getting a Hobie 16 or 18 first. Why or why not get the Nacra. It is a fully decked out racer... but I need help deciding. No turf battles intended here! Thanks!!! Dave

Tough choice. My experience as a day sailor on a Nacra 5.2 from about the same vintage was mixed. It was FAST and it won't pitchpole like a Hobie 16 due to the bow design. But my problem with it was it is more racer than pleasure boat, meaning the jib blocks were in the middle of the tramp so the crew was getting tangled in them. Also the boom was very low over the tramp compared to the Hobie, so combine that with avoiding the jib blocks and the crew didn't have much fun on gybes or tacks. I prefered the ease of sailing the Hobie over the Nacra.

Nacras sure look cool and fast, but I have never been on one. The club I belong to has none of them around - we have only a Prindle or two and a bunch of Hobies. The head Kuhuna of the club told me that he had owned a Nacra at one time ( he presently has a Hobie 16 and an 18). He said that he didn't like the Nacra because it was very difficult to carry by hand because of no overhanging deck to hull caprail.
