Sales numbers can be misleading, too.
Hobie Cat counts sales to dealers. Those boats may not end up in the end user's hands for months or even years. If stored properly, a Hobie Cat in its original packaging would be as good as new 10 or even 20 years after it was "sold".
There once was a dealer not too far from me who reportedly bought over 400 boats in one year so he could claim the title of the "Worlds Largest Hobie Dealer". Lord only knows how long it took him to sell that many boats - even in the mid '80's when this happened. Needless to say, he's no longer in business.
I remember the days when I worked for a dealer in '79-'80 when we were selling them faster than we could put them together. 10 to 15 a week in the summer. Very good times.
