Making upgrades to the old 16 to get the maximum possible mast rake. Have the low profile 6:1 main blocks and need a new main sheet (field mice chewed up the sheet that came with  ).

Want to change to 5/16" (8mm) with a 1/4" core tail for the blocks themselves.
Would 10' be too much (or not enough) 1/4"?
What about shortening the overall length of 44'?

If you're planning to race it, tapered sheets are a no-no:
Quote:
16.2 Sheets and lines:
a) Any diameter and quality of sheets and lines
may be used unless prescribed otherwise in
these rules or in the individual boat class rules.
b) Any sheet or lines made in whole or part of
wire are prohibited, except as supplied by the
HOBIE CAT CO. Sheets and lines, with the exception
of the spinnaker halyard systems, are
not permitted to be tapered
unless allowed in
the individual boat Class Rules.

There's no real reason to taper the main. In fact, the smaller line doesn't hold as well in the cleat and you wouldn't be able to flip the sheet end-for-end when it starts to wear at the cleat.

I use a 37' main sheet - same as my jib sheet.

Damn...thanks for the heads up Matt. Seemed like a great idea, I'll have to be careful reading the forums dominanted by open class people and remember to refer to our OD rules.

Thanks for saving 7' of main, it always seems as though there's way more sheet than necessary.
