Post subject: | Spinnaker for H16 - What size??? |
I am planning to add a spinnaker to my 16. I found a spinnaker sail that came from a 24ft Seafarer; Does anyone know what the sail dimensions are for a spinnaker on a H16? This one's probably over sized but I'm not sure where to start. Any input on size ranges would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! |

A spinnaker for a monohull is entirely the wrong shape for a catamaran. Most monohull spinnakers are symmetrical and full and meant for sailing dead downwind. Catamaran spinnakers are assymetrical and flat and meant for VMG reaching at ~45 degrees apparent wind. They're more like a large jib sail than a conventional spinnaker. What you have is completely useless on a Hobie 16. The Hobie 16 spinnaker is quite small. |

My buddy just put a spinnaker on his boat. I think he said it was 12 or 13 meters square. We're having a blast! He is already talking about a larger one now. |

I think the H16 spins are typically smaller for a reason. The mast tang is just pop riveted into plastic with the comp tip. If you have an older all alum mast you're golden. |

I do actually, I have the one piece extrusion. WooHoo. Have you (or anybody) seen or heard of The Hooter: http://www.catsailor.com/bestof_articles/Hooter.html Thoughts? Opinions? Concerns? |

Saw one on a H14 a couple years ago. Don't remember much detail though. |

I double checked the spinnaker size. It's 128 square feet. Everything is totally home grown. He made it with an industrial sewing machine and a $300 sail kit. The rest was modeled from the cat sailor link above, the Hobie Europe instructions and a lot of scientific guesswork (trial and error). Boom from a sawed off wind surfer mast. Piece parts (spin lock cleats, ratchet blocks, sheet rope etc) all begged, borrowed and purchased. We had a Hobie Tiger and a Nacra F18 to look at so we weren't flying totally blind. |

Thanks Sunvista! Sound's exactly like the process I am engaging! One bummer is that a couple of years ago I "freecycled" a windsurfer that I had received via freecycle myself. Would've, could've, should've..... |

Jman6631 did you put together a DIY Spinnaker setup for your Hobie 16? I would like to try and do the same thing. If so, please tell us how? Exact sail size too. Did you go with a windsurfer mast for the pole? I'm eager to add on to my Hobie 16 Thanks, Mike |

Surf City Catamarans wrote: MG dimension is critical. Do You have a MG Dimension? What is a MG Dimension? Also, any one now what size and length the lines are for a midpole snuffer system? Halyard/dousing line (loop)? Tack Line? Spinnaker Sheet (Loop)? Would 40mm carbo and auto ratcheting blocks be suitable for the sheets? What size blocks for the halyard & tack lines? I'm gathering all my blocks now. I just purchased the aluminum pipe that will be my pole. Thanks, |
