Thanks David,
I found the Hobie 16 Spinnaker on catsailor at the following sizes:
Luff = 21.5'
Foot = 9'
Leech = 18.7'

2' longer luff? I wonder why the difference. :?:

Mike

:o Ok, I got my spinnaker made to the smaller sizes and it looks really too small.

Luff = 19.5 ft Foot = 8.75 ft Leach = 17.25 ft My distance from tack point to top will allow for a 25' Luff? Should probably made this 24' luff...

This one might fit a Hobie 14 well. Any one have a larger Spinnaker they want to get rid of?

Wow, that does look small, even with 2 more feet added to the luff, especially when I see this !!!

What's the distance between the mast tang and the spi tang. I also noticed that there is no visible pre-bend in your spi pole (which has nothing to do with the size of your spi)?

The distance between the hole of the shroud tang and the spinnaker tang is 54". Per instructions from Hobie cat site.

Pre-bend: I don't think I will be able to introduce much pre-bend since I'm using a heavy duty aluminum pipe for my spin pole. The heavy wall of this pipe makes it pretty stiff.

I had fun sailing today at the Texas City Dike. Maybe I got a little tipsy....I mean the boat did.
Thanks to those who came to the assistance of the poor guy who decided to swim from the beach 1/2 mile out to me with out a life jacket to help. I was fine hanging on my righting line with my harness hook. But I think he got tired about 1/4 mile out. (Note to everyone, don't swim out to rescue others without a life jacket!)

So I rigged up the spinnaker today and found it took some extra time.

Then I went out and got foot loose!

and flew my baby spinnaker. I need a bigger one.

I had a great time and the wind wasn't too strong. My top speed today was 15.3 mph.

Actually SplashTX, I'm feeling kinda responsible for your situation. It was I that quoted the dimensions you cut your spinnaker down to. Got them from a sailmaker and not Hobie.

Nevertheless, the spi I now use is from a 5o5 and flys much like the spi in the pic below:

Looking at your spi, it doesn't look like the radius is cut much like the one in the pic (it's not supposed to be). That's not to say that this is the problem. The problem is that your spi is too small. Even 2 more feet on the luff doesn't look like it would be adequate.

Meanwhile, I'm keeping an eye out for a spi for you. BTW, nice looking boat !!!

No worries, I researched everywhere before pulling the trigger to have this size made. It was most unfortunate that Hobie couldn't come through and share the size for those of us in the USA that wanted to try a local built spinnaker on our Hobie 16's. These things aren't class legal in any of our races here.

It was a lot cheaper buying this than the Hobie built one from Europe. And because Kelly Hanson had some production issues they discounted it 50% off for me too.

I'm sure when I'm done with it it will make a great spinnaker for someones Hobie 14.

If anyone is out there with an actual Hobie 16 Spinnaker, please measure it and share the sizes including mid girth.

I'm thinking the new size would need to be closer to: Luff 23.5', Foot 10', Leech 20.5', a bit bigger than the one I ordered Luff 19.5', Foot 8.75', Leech 17.25'

Thanks,

I appreciate your consideration but inaccurate information is a pet-peeve of mine and the direction in which it flows matters not !!! Typically, I rely on the source or first-hand experience before I pass information on. In this case, I had neither. This is a site where many rely on the experiences of others to help solve their problems and there are some here that go far beyond the norm to do exactly that. If a response can't be given that isn't known to be a fact, there's nothing wrong with saying "I don't know!!!" Have a great week-end !!!

I sold the smaller spinnaker I had made by Kelly Hansen Sails and picked up a used spinnaker that was originally an F18 Spin. The 2nd owner had it cut-down to fit his 17' boat.

It's much larger than my old one. Might be a little over-sized, but sure is fun. I can't wait until next summer to push this thing without any worries of getting wet. The water is already getting a little cool here.
