UPDATE: Hobie have replaced the hulls with new ones! I went to the dealer yesterday and helped un-box the new hulls and put them on. The dealer is shipping the damaged hulls back to Hobie so they can figure out what went wrong. Hobie are a great company and stand by their products. Thank you Hobie! See you all on the water!

to bad they wont give you new hulls if they have soft-spots in them  after 30 years of course |

I relation to stress fractures,can gel coat scratch patch be used to cosmetically blend those hair line cracks? The review that I found on this product isn't very positive.What works and is easy to use?I have a 1981 Hobie 16 that has two small areas with stress fractures and I want to "erase" them. Thanks Bill 404 21SE It's the flexing of the substrate that causes cracks in gel. If the glass has been compromised, which it probably has, then you would need to repair it first. The cracks would probably just reappear if the glass wasn't repaired. Hard to say though, you would just have to grind in there and see what's going on. |

Way to go for Hobie USA stepping up on this. While, I am NOT and expert on Hobie contruction, I would concure that this looks like shipping damage - I'd say side impact. |

Is it normal for boat to develop stress fractures over a few years? Here is a 2005 with fractures.  [/URL]Is there reason to be concerned about the boat? I assume not but want to be sure. |

Since gelcoat is non-reinforced (no glass fibers, just resin) it develops hairline cracks in high stress locations (such as the hull flange). Not cause for concern unless they widen or are weeping water. sm |

Cracks like that - especially on the outside flange - are often the result of strapping the boat down to the trailer too tightly. 1) Don't run straps over the hulls. 2) If you do, they don't have to be super tight. |
