Halyard Keeper?

Hey all! I took my H16 out yesterday for the first time with my kids (one at a time so they wouldn't be all up under me while I scrambled around blowing my tacks...) Anyway, had a blast, light winds, so I got to really learn the boat and rigging it while not being nervous about the wind. The Jib kept hanging up on the mast and halyards as expected and that was a pain with little kids not really strong enough to get the jib unstuck so I had to keep doing it. I guess it's not so bad if you make your crew do it!! I can't find any halyard keepers at Murrays or some of the other parts suppliers. Maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing? Suggestions on where, what to get? Maybe -- what can I make one out of? I'll also look at the threads about shortening the ends of the battens.

By halyard keeper I assume you mean the small plastic clip that fastens to the side of the mast, that you clip the jib halyard to. The main halyard isn't problem since you take it behind the shroud before cleating it. I pull my jib halyard back with a small length of the end of the jib halyard itself and tie it to the downhaul. The battens still hang up but not as bad as hooking on to the halyard.

Can't say for the OP, but mine only stick out by 3/8". But I have not tried them yet, have not gone out this summer with my boat yet and last year when I got it, it did not have any battens in the jib, so obviously they did not hang.

I have the super jib battens on my older boat and have bought them for my new boat, they make a big difference. You can get halyard clips from Hobie

I take my two boys (9 & 11) out there with me almost everytime I go. They are my docking engines when the wind fails. It cracks me up everytime I send them into the water for steering.

Try making sure your jib halyard is set tight enough. I started out not realizing that it took the place of the forestay (your forestay should go completely slack when the jib halyard is set). It cut way back on the number jib snags - but I still have them sometimes.

I hear ya! Last weekend, I took both my 15 year old and then my 13 year old and made them paddled back to the dock while I chilled at the helm, pretending it was very important for me to do that. Its good to have someone to order around! I did have my jib too slack, I found at the end of the day. Noted for future.

You definitely need to use the halyard grips on the mast. Last year I discovered McLube lubricant and I just spray a little on the ends of the battens. Works great and a large can should last for years.

Where are the grips placed on the mast specifically?

Tip: To free up a jib batten gets caught on a halyard during a tack grab the jib sail leach and push forward, then across. If you have a some wind, you just need to push forward and it will blow across.

The natural instinct is to just push it across, but this just seems to cause it to stick more.

I placed my jib halyard grip about 70" below the bottom hole of the mast tang and the rivet holes for the jib halyard grip are 2" from the edge of the sail's luff track. This puts it somewhere near the top batten of the jib.

I didn't use a main halyard grip since I place my main halyard behind the starboard shroud before tying it off on it's cleat. After I tie off the downhaul on it's cleat, I take the last foot of the downhaul line to pull the main halyard back to the downhaul cleat and then finish tying it off to the downhaul cleat. Another way is to loop the main halyard around the downhaul cleat before you you tie it off to it's own cleat. Either way pulls the main halyard back far enough so the jib battens don't hit it.

I have a new H16 with the Aussie Jib system. I was very frustrated with the jib battens constantly hanging up in the halyard in light to moderate winds.

I installed the Hobie Halyard Grip about 48inches below the mast tang, on the right hand side of the mast (same side as the main halyard). I've been out a couple of times now and the grip works perfectly. I have had zero issues since installing it.

As a side note, I was very impressed by something when I was installing the grip. It was a hot sunny day and I was working outside. The mast is black anodized and gets quite hot when sitting in the sun. I was drilling the first hole and once the bit fully cleared the aluminum, there was this rush of air that came out of the mast. I was happy to realize how well sealed the it was, in the event I ever tip over. These Hobie Cats are very well made boats.
