Post subject:  New to the Hobie world
Hello all have done a lot of research, so far lots of great info. I recently picked up a 1984 Hobie 16 for free has everything including worn thru hulls. I have some ?s #1. Boat was in fresh water for several years with water in hulls as stated above bottoms are worn thru and I can see inside.. the styro foam inside one seems to move around any suggestions on a repair?. #2. it appears that the glass may have osmosis lots of small bumps in gel coat and there seems to be NO soft spots that I could find anywhere, should I be concerned? I plan on repairing the hulls myself and have done much research on that and feel very comfortable doing that. just want to make sure I won't be wasting my time.
sail is in good condition(was stored out of weather) tramp is also good and all hardware is there except drain plugs. I have sailed before AMF sunfish and just got back into sailing with a little 11 foot sea snark(basically a Styrofoam beer cooler with a sail) looking forward to more speed.

The foam blocks are loose in there... no problem.

You need to glass across the gap and then build up layers of glass and re-shape the keel. This is commonly called a "bottom job". There are a number of posts on the technique.

Less of a concern than the gaping hole in the keel. You would have to grind down each bump to expose the void and then fill with putty.

Love that... I too came from a Sunfish to the H16 back in the day. Yep... WAY more power and speed, but so much more stable than a sunfish. The transition is not that tough and the speed will be a real thrill!

My boats in 2008 - a H16 and a Snark. The Snark was squirelly to sail but it was fun.

Thanks Guys

I took the main sail and the jib out of its original dry rotted bag last night and really got stoked its huge and in greaaaaat shape yahoooo. this will be a winter project and I will try to keep you informed
