Post subject:  Jib set-up
So my new to me 16 was aquired with out a jib. I just don't have the budget for a new one and am on the hunt for a super cheap one, What I do have is a old hobie 12 main. I measured it up and it is very close, little long in the foot.
So it would be more like a genoa. What do you guy's think? Could I use it in place of the stock jib or should I recut it? Or should I just try to sail without a jib? This is a second boat to my 18, but I really want to get it going as soon and fast as possible.

1) While the sail may be approximately the same size, it' not built the same. The 16's jib has a wire in the luff that replaces the forestay when the jib is hoisted. The Hobie 12 sail is probably too full, too. Jibs need to be flat.

2) Where are you going to sheet it to? The foot is too long to sheet it to the front crossbar, so you'd need to sheet it further aft. Unless you have the parts lying around, you'd spend almost as much rigging up a sheeting system as you would getting a decent used jib - and doing it right.

Every now and then on here I see someone looking for sails for the older boats out of production, like the Hobie 12. I would save it for someone who needs it. Like Matt said, it would take more in modifications to make it work right anyway than a decent used jib would be.

Thanks for the input. I was hoping to sell the 12 sail to help fund this project but no bite's yet.
I'm watching that jib on ebay $68 is right up my alley.
