I want to repaint my old hobie 16 but have no idea what to use. There are some scratches as dings so I want to smooth those out too. If anyone can help me on what are the best products out there for good prices some step by step instructions and what you have done I would apreciate it |

I painted my hulls a few years ago and it has held up really well. I used Marine-tex to fill some chips and blisters and then West Marine polyurethane topside paint. I rolled the paint on slowly with a foam roller. I think if you do a search here you should find lots of painting tips. |

i did mine last summer with interlux brightside poly. I did the roll and tip method. Youtube has a bunch of how to videos. |

Thanks for those but i sort of want to use gel coat because where i go sailing is mostly rocky so if i hit rocks hard i dont want it to go through all the way to the fiberglass just make a little scratch. Is gel coat too hard to do and not worth it or for my situation would it be better |

I don't think gel coat will protect your hulls from striking a rock. Not even a steel hull will do that. Costa Concordia for example. |

Alright then what do you think is the best all around paint that looks good doesn't cost a lot and is fairly easy to out on. |

After spending several hours sanding paint so I could do a bottom job on mine, I'll never use paint again. I use gelcoat when I refinished the bottom. I already have an air compressor, so I just had to buy an HVLP sprayer. It was not that hard to do, just take your time, look at a lot of videos on Youtube. Most important thing, the final result will be mostly dependant on the prep work. |

I would suggest a two part Interlux paint. This is an AKZO company. They make a full line of excellent coatings for this application. Lee Metzman |

I have talked to a few guy here local in fort wort. Talked to one guy about gel coat he said just paint it. They all suggested using this stuff. Unless your going to leave your boat in water all the time. http://www.awlgrip.com/Pages/awlgrip-home.aspx |
