Post subject:  General help!!! PLEASE!

I started sailing a month or so ago with a Sunfish, loved it!

Now purchased a Hobie 16 and finally set it up today...

Few initial questions...

1- Seems like the aircraft wire lines which hold the mast side to side towards the hulls is of different length making the mast sit not plumb to the boat. Is there a standard length which those cables need to be?

2- The rudders are not pointing in the same direction, should those point in the same direction or should the not? (I did try to loosen the screws which can enable an adjustement yet neother screw wanted to loosen up!)

HELP!

The shrouds (aircraft wires) should be the same length -there are 3 in total including the forestay, so check you have the right ones for the shrouds (actually including the shortest ones for the bridles attached to the bows there are 5 wires and 7 - 9 if you include the trapeze wires) there are wire guides posted here in the tech forums which will provide measurements for all wire rigging but be sure you know what year your cat is (serial number on transom last 2 numbers) since they have changed some over the years. - also check that your chainplates (where the shrouds attach to the decks) are the same length

Rudder arms should bend inwards, it is very possible you have the switched l to r (Port to Starboard)

Older boats had longer shrouds than newer ones. So it's possible that you have a new and old shroud causing the difference in length.

When purchasing a used boat, it's always a good idea to replace the standing rigging (stuff holding the mast up).

The manual might help you figure some stuff out.
- click on Support on the top of this page
- click on Sailboats on the left banner under Product Support
- scroll down to the Hobie 16

There you will find the parts list, assembly manual, etc. That's where I started 2 years ago when trying to figure out stuff with mine.

Thank you very much for your help and advice!

As it turns out one of the shrouds is effectively shorter than the other one from an apparent repair. I added an extender doubling up the multi hole extender that it had making both shrounds the same length.

I would like to thank the three guys from the Regatta in Puerto Penasco for helping me out in setting up the boat and the lovely lady who showed me how to sail it!

Looking forward to learning much more and enjoying endless sailing days!

My one thing I have to deal with at this time is to repair one of the hulls which is a little soft in front of the front trampoline post...
