Post subject:  Hobie 16 Ramp

Hi,
I'm building a ramp to be able to pull my 16 out of the lake. I'll be using boat trailer rollers. I'll be building 2 "tracks" to pull the hulls up on.

Does anyone know what the exact distance is between the bottom v of the hulls? Is this distance fixed along the length of the boat, or are the bottom lines fo the hulls not parallel?

the rollers are about 4 inches wide, so there is some room to play with, but not a whole lot..

Thanks
Wallace

I don't know the width, my boat is at the lake as well.

I build some ramps too last year, but I used ABS pipe instead of boat rollers. It's much cheaper, the boat slides on it instead of rolling.

Basic design is a ladder with sides in 2x4 drilled with 1.5" ABS pipes across every 2 feet.

Just another idea to throw around if you are trying to cut cost. I made each ladder 16" wide so I have a wider margin of error when sliding it up and down.

Old rug or plastic boat carpet or synthetic grass like material will not harm the hulls if you cover the deck with any of those.

Thanks Johny and 2slo,
good info, however I've already bought, paid for and built the rails with the rollers..perhpas a bit premature.

Now I just need to know how far apart they should be spaced. I guess I can always flip the boat over and measure, or use trial and error.

I'll let you know how it goes.
thanks

Tonite I will measure the widths and post them. Rollers have the advantage of one-person rolling up the 16 into the ramp.

Its dark out and I was measuring in poor light, so these are close enough for government work.

I have 8" rollers on my trailer and they measure ~82 inches center to center.

The bows measure ~81" tang to tang and the rudder pins measure ~84"

I had several of those (one for each model) when I had a dealership here on Lake Gaston back in the '80s. I set posts uphill a little with a small winch on top of each. It was a bit of a hill that I had them on, so they wouldn't stay in place without something holding them-like the winch. The winches made it pretty effortless to pull them out of the water. I also had a tie-down under each dolphin striker.

I don't remember the spacing, but they were parallel.

If it ever stops raining here tonite I can measure the distance between the center points of the rollers on my trailer to confirm Tri_X_Troll's measure... I think Tri_X_Troll is on to a good guess.

Here are my findings off my 16.

All measurements at the very center under the keels, pontoon to pontoon.

Aft under the rudder hinges: 87"
Under the aft pilon: 87"
Under the fwd pilon: 84"
Fwd on the tip of the pontoons: 78-1/2"

Hope this helps.

Wallace,

Down here in Shreveport, the shoreline around our club is completely bulkheaded. We have no beach to launch from. Our solution: ramps, similar to the one you've described. Based on my experience of sailing from a ramp for the past four years, I'd like to make a suggestion. I don't think the idea of using 4" rollers is the best way to go. They'll be difficult to sail up on with any consistancy. If you try to do that, you'll likely fall of the edge of the rollers more often than not, quite possibily damaging your boat in the process.

We've come up with a very effective ramp. It's made of wood laid across a metal frame. It measures 24' long by 12' wide and is hinged to the bulkhead with huge hinges. We've carpeted 4'x8'x1/2" plywood sheets to use as runners to slide cats up and down the ramp. Sliding the Hobie down a pair of four foot wide runners to launch is pretty easy. We recover by sailing right up on the carpet. Just make sure that if anyone with a daggerboard cat uses it, they remember to raise their boards.

Here's a couple of photos:

Side note - I just bought a lightly used six-batten sail, Fantasia pattern from 1986. It's still a little crisp, looks great.

I like that solution a lot.
MVD - that looks like the SYC (I grew up in S'port).
