I have gone thru 3 of these in 6yrs.All of them broke where the wire is swaged to the rope.I have checked up top of the mast to look for any issues that might cause this and found none..
I do sail lots 80+ times a year so maybe it is just due to wear?

I have been using the same halyard and wire combo for about 6 years. I have a 3/8 line tied to a thimble that has been swaged to the end of the wire halyard. Every year I snip a little of the line off where the knot was and retie it to the thimble using a bowline. Simple and inexpensive. Never had a failure yet.

How do you get the 3/8" knot to make it through the 2 comp-tip pulleys? On my "salty dog marine" swaged halyard, I hoist the main 95% of the way on line, and then only the last foot or so is on wire with the swaged part that hooks onto the mast near the head.

bluesman: Could be wrong, but I think mdgann is referring to the main halyard for the all Al (not comp tip) mast.

mmadge: I do think it's just wear. I've broken two....just as you describe...since 1997. You get a lot of bleeping sailing in considering your location!

Been on the water since April 5 this year and gennerally soft water sail until mid Oct.then it is iceboating season.Does not hurt having the Summer off and living on a lake.
