Hey all my main traveler cam cleat has broken off the cross bar. It appears that it had one rivet and two screws holding it on. Do you think it would weaken the cross bar if I just drilled the three holes all the way through and put lock nuts on the underside to hold it in place. This is a 1981 model and has been modified so I'm not sure if this was the original setup. The two holes already drilled appear to be aftermarket mods.

Thanks in advance

Will

Will, I did see this response in another post.

No - larger screws will interfere with the rotation of the traveller cleat.

You can offset the base slightly - about 1/2" and drill new holes for the rivet / screws. Be careful not to drill the screw holes too large. When you screw them in, turn them like a tap - 1/2 turn forward, 1/4 turn back, repeat. That'll help "cut" the threads into the aluminum extrusion.

This could provide an easy solution. Whatever is done I recommend applying a little Lanocote where the stainless steel screws and rivet contact the aluminum crossbar. Lanacote is an excellent product used to reduce galvanic corrosion between the dissimilar metals. Do not use an aluminum rivet when reattaching the base plate. Aluminum will rip right off. Monel is preffered but West Marine sells stainless rivets that work great.

Do either of you live in So Cal?

I have a 1981 H16 tramp frame I am willing to give away if someone wants it. It is in great shape.

You just have to come get it.

Thanks for the gracious offer but I'm Florida. Used to live in San Diego and miss it every day.
