I am rehabilitating the rudders on "Bad Kittie" my recently acquired 74' H16. The issue is that the upper rudder plates are extremely loose where the tiller arms attach. The Rivets are extremely loose. My plan of attack before I hit this thing with a carbide drill bit. 1. Get approval of this plan 2. Get carbide drill bit at 1/8", SS rivets, and a rivet gun 3. Drill out the center of the rivets and remove them 4. Install new rivets What say you? Is this all there is to it? |

What are the "upper rudder plates" on a '73 Hobie 16? There are no 1/8" rivets on a Hobie 16. Sounds like the tiller tubes are loose in the upper rudder castings. Drill off the rivet heads (use a 3/16" cobalt bit), knock the tails in with a punch, remove tiller tubes, wrap with electrical tape, re-insert, use new 3/16" monel rivets to re-attach. Done. Don't use a hardware store rivet gun. Use the long-handled one from Harbor Freight tools. |

Use epoxy, even the hardware two tube stuff, rather than electrical tape. Then rivet. |

I assume that after I use the epoxy I will need to drill the holes out in the casting and tube? |

Well ... maybe. You might epoxy everything together and let it set and then clean out the existing holes with a drill before you rivet. But if you're me you'd probably slather on the epoxy, push the arms in, and pop the rivets. I'm sloppy and usually in a rush and I'd like the rivets in there to make sure everything is lined up the way it was before the stuff sets. Mine are totally slop free and solid after a years use. |
