Post subject:  Looking to purchase my first Hobie Cat!!

Hey everyone,

I'm pretty excited to find this forum. I've sailed on a sunfish for a few years and have fallen in love with sailing. I'm looking to purchase my first hobie cat- used for a decent price. I'm just looking for suggestions on the price to pay for a good condition hobie cat? I came across this one on CL and it looks great but I was hoping to pay closer to 1,000--however, it does come with the trailer.

Can someone tell me if this looks like a good deal, or should I try and talk him down a bit. It's over an hour away or else I would just go take a look.

Thanks in advance!

I suspect the price is driven largely by the cat trax and harken blocks (used cat trax in good condition will often go for $300+). You may be able to talk him down $100 or so, but if the boat is in good shape, I don't think the price is unreasonable. However, I would first check the boat for soft spots/delamination. If it has "hull storage", my guess is they installed a port after finding soft spots. I would also check the sails--they look faded, but if no holes or fraying, maybe they are okay.

thanks a lot bucknut, appreciate it. Do you think I'll have a problem learning how to sail the hobie after just sailing a sunfish? Anything else I should check? I'm thinking about going to take a look/possibly purchasing it later today

thanks

I agree with bucknut that you should really inspect the hulls.
You can see in the photo they have cut a port in the deck in front of the pylons. If it was not delam'ed at some point there is no way they would have done that.

I would thoroughly inspect the hulls and sails, especially around stress points (where the rudders connect to the hulls, where the sidestays connect to the hulls, etc). I found a useful guide on the internet along the lines of "what to look for when buying a Hobie 16" that I used when looking for Hobies.

If you have sailed a Sunfish, you will already have a lot of the basics, so learning to sail the Hobie won't be too bad. There are some significant differences in terms of tacking, pointing, and managing the jib, but nothing you couldn't learn over a weekend. I would try to line up someone who has Hobie experience for your maiden voyage because singlehanding a Hobie is a lot different from a Sunfish, especially if you flip it. The only other downside is that rigging a Hobie takes a little longer than a Sunfish, but all in all, you will love Hobie sailing.

thanks everyone for the responses. Went and checked it out and I just wasn't feeling it, didn't appear to be in the greatest condition so I passed. If anyone has any other helpful comments/or knows anyone trying to sell a hobie in the Massachusetts area, please let me know!

thanks

Looks like you are pretty close to this one:

It's pricey but seems likes it's almost new, sailed 3 times per the listing.

Welcome Sour !!!

Hope you get you sails soon. We are here to help. I learned practically by myself and never had sailed before, but one thing for sure is that good advise and knowledge from expert Hobie Sailors got me to the water quickly and succesfully, so ask questions, thats the trick !!!

thanks to everyone! Luckily, I found a good deal and picked up a hobie 16 last weekend. Since then, i've been out sailing everyday and feel very comfortable sailing and rigging it now. 900 with the trailer, couldn't be more stoked

CONGRATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice looking boat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please remember to try to carry a Waterproof VHF radio and some power bars and drinks. Sailing is Great, but crap happens, and you must be ready to deal with the mishaps.

HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've not seen those sail colors before but it sure looks good!

If no one has mentioned.. or if you are not aware.. do a little homework on what causes "Pitch-Pole" (it's not fun), and big wind jibes. Have fun!
