Post subject:  Used sails question

I have the possibilty of buying some used sails.

1. 93 nationals - purchased for the races
2. Used only for 2 race series
3. Stored since '93, pretty much unused
4. How much are they worth if they are pristine?

Only picture i have which is very poor quality. No battens included. Will try For more pix.

Thanks for any feedback.

To a certain extent, the only thing that matters is that they're almost 20 years old.

Newer sails are cut differently (the jib especially) and the build quality is much better.

If I could read the sail number, I could tell who used them in the event (I was a competitor there).

They were used at '93 Womens Nationals, sail #98838

Understand about the age. Would the cut of the sails match my '81? I re-rigged the boat last August after talking with Doug at Murrays and i think i have more mast rake than with the original rigging.

Appreciate the help.

The sail numbers were removed from the on-line results, so figuring out who had them is a bit tougher than I thought. I'll have to dig into the archives a bit harder.

Sure, they'll fit - probably better than new sails, but there were major changes to the build quality (teflon bolt rope covers, INOX grommets, etc.) of the sails in the late '90s that make these sails less desirable.

I think the skipper was Crowley.

So new set of sails with new technology but may not fit as well are $1600+

If pristine but old these good for $700? Currently the ask is more than that. Other buyers are still in line before me.

Thanks for the info!

New, custom sails only to place 19th (out of 21) in the women's? And then not to use them hardly ever again? Something doesn't smell right.

New sails will fit just fine, and the cut of the jib will allow significantly more mast rake. It's hard to convey how much better the sails are now than what they were then. I laugh at the people on eBay who sail their used sails are "crispy". You don't know what "crispy" is until you've unpacked a brand new sail.

No way these sails are "pristine" unless they've been rolled and vacuum sealed for 20 years. The cloth gets brittle over time. If they've been folded, the fabric at the creases will be damaged.

These are worth $500, max.
