I recently bought an '82 hobie 16 and found that the end cap was actually broken. The two points where it's riveted to the mast are broken. The previous owner said he planned on putting 4 new rivets in it when he had a chance but never got around to it.

Since the 2 rivet points are broken, not just the rivets, I can't use those 2 spots to fix it. Is drilling 4 new holes through the mast and end cap the best solution or should I just buy a brand new end cap for the thing and use the 2 factory rivet points?

Are u talking about the mast base="cap"

Is the extrussion (mast) itself damaged where the rivets go?
If not just buy a new mast base and rivet it again on the existing rivet holes, sealing with silicone etc...

If the mast is damaged I would consider repairing the mast area instead of drilling more holds in the mast.

and check out the "arguing"

It's the cap, the piece of metal that goes inside the base of the mast. The two rivet points are broken, like they were yanked out with a TON of force. The mast looks fine to me, no dings or dents, just the usually minor scrapes on it.

Like I said before, the previous owner mentioned that he had planned to drill out 4 holes and rivet 4 points instead of the original 2... but my first thought when I looked at it was to just replace it and use the existing rivet holes. Why put more holes in the mast!

Can somebody give me the part number for the mast base?

Or confirm it for me? #20640011

Anyone got a price?

Found this: 50-20640011 on catsailer.com... is that the part I'm looking for?

My hinge assembly for stepping the mast is still all good, just the base that gets riveted to the mast is broken.

That part number I mentioned from catsailor.com is the base from the response I got from their contact us form. Looks to be $47 and change.

Funny, the same thing happended to my 82 hobie about a month ago. Unfortunatly I found this out while stepping the mast myself. Since the mast came detached from the base/stepping unit while still in the air it was a demasting extravaganza. Seriously, nobody was hurt and the mast (unbelieveably) didn't take any damage.
O.K. for the repair.
I bought a new mast base and new stainless steel rivets. Since the old rivets were still in the mast I used a small die grinder and a cutting wheel to cut the head of the rivets off which worked well. Once this is done, clean out any existing glue/silicone that could interfere with your new mast base from the mast. Next, you will needs to drill new holes in your new mast base since it doesn't come pre drilled. Put the base in place in the mast the way you want it to be and use the existing holes in the mast as guides for drilling. The base is made of a very soft metal so it wasn't difficult to drill. Now, remove mast base from mast, Clean out any metal shavings from drilling, put a healthy amount of "3M 5200" marine adhesive/sealer around the mast base to make a complete seal, place it back in the mast with the holes lining up and rivit it back in place. This worked for me. Good luck

H16 mast base 20640011 $47.30
h16 mast base rivets 8010131 X 3 $0.65

Put 2 rivets on each side and one of the front, this is how the new boats are coming from the factory. if the existing holes in the mast are damaged drill new one in another local, the mast base come un drilled, seal up the holes and go sailing!

if what you have done seems to be working you might be okay, I would prob. add one to the front of the mast, this is where I tend to see more stress on the casting.

Brad,
will do for sure. Nice thing is that I ordered a couple of extra rivits when I ordered the mast base so I don't have to put any more $$ out.
Later
