All:

Just wanted to say a quick 'Hello' to everyone. New to the forum, not necessarily Hobie, certainly not to sailing. Just picked up a '16 this summer and looking to develop my skills, knowledge, and friendships.

I'm located in central Mississippi (Clinton) and have already had a chance to touch base with several die-hards. A quick 'thanks' to Jerome, Steven, and Joe for all the info and tips so far!

As I have an older boat (1982, I think) that has been neglected for a bit, I am already planning a number of repairs/upgrades during the coming months. I anticipate this forum being a 'go-to' for me as a key resource as I progress--please accept a kind 'Thank you' in advance. :-)

Hobie Frog - Clinton! Passed there many times over the years on I-20 Charlotte to Shreveport and back. Welcome to H16s!

Welcome back to sailing. I'm new on the forum also. 1983 H14T. I check all the forums. I'm from Grenada/Sardis/Enid. North Mississippi. You need to watch out for Gators down there. Maybe next spring we can hook up for some sailing.

Unfortunately, I don't know Joe or Steven, but I can tell you that you are very fortunate to have access to Jerome Vaughan. He is an outstanding Hobie resource and sailor as well as a great guy.

I'm in the Memphis/Sardis/Artkabuttla area but would love to help!
I have two Hobie 16's ( '75 and a mid 80's ) now and have successfully done a lot of repairs ect that recently got tested really good at the Juana's Navarre Beach FL Regatta. Sardis is a great place to sail, first off, its HUGE, secondly its well kept and there are plenty of places for a nice hot shower on the lake launch areas. Camping is great too... Hobies make great clothes hangers and misc storage when off the water, LOL
I've tuned up rudders, replaced cams, dissembles, done delam repairs ect and have picked a huge amount of helpful knowledge from this site and http://www.thebeachcats.com 8)

This coming up season you'll see me out on the water a lot. Getting some work done to the boats and trailers already in anticipation :)

FXloop, I hate to sound like a know-it-all, but I noticed from the picture that your mainsail isn't raised all the way up. There is a lug on the wire part of the halyard that you can catch in the fork near the top of the mast. It will hold the sail in place and keep your boom higher off the trampoline. Here's a link to a diagram: http://www.mariner-sails.com/assembly.asp?id=23176. The diagram depicts the new halyard with a comptip mast, but the halyard works the same way on solid aluminum masts.

I'd never bet a penny on the outcome of the Egg Bowl! Have you memorized the words to Rocky Top yet? That's probably required to get along in your new area! BTW...I checked out Concord YC on the web. Looks nice....how's the cat storage/launching?

Thanks, I've heard the sail tip before however I can see the metal grommet catch the small fork at the top. I can swing with all 200# pulling the sail up and that's as far as it goes, furthermore, once hooked I can let the halyard go and the sail stays put.... It's something wrong with my mast/halyard ya think?

Often times the problem raising the main is that the bolt rope on the leading edge of the sail (the luff) will tend to bind as it enters the track on the mast. If you focus on holding the luff in close to the mast and feeding it into the track slowly, that might make a difference. Another thing that might help is spraying a generous amount of teflon spray on the bolt rope and in the track on the mast. If your mast is down, check the track for any debris in it. Maybe some wasps or dirt dobbers build a nest in it. I've had an acorn get lodged in mine. Also check that the halyard doesnt have a knot or kink that may cause it to bind.

At Concord Yacht Club we store the cats on the trailers, mast up, and tow them over to a nice sandy beach where we launch and recover. It's a pretty nice set up. It's easier than launching off the ramps we used in Shreveport.
