I've got a option to buy a 16 that had the mast, sails, and rigging stoled off it for $150.00 trailer included. I'm very torn on this between my emotions of saving a boat and the economics. Looking at used parts I could easily rack up $$ to get it in shape. If I'm not careful it could add up to as much as buying a boat all in 1 piece. I'll check it out in 3 weeks for condition, year, delam issues. If it's in rough shape I'll walk away but otherwise it will be a tough call. Any advice on this would be appreciated, would love to save this boat but need to be smart about it.

By the time you get all that you will be in the range of a complete boat. Personally I would spend the $1000-1500 for a complete boat. Though a trailer alone is worth 150$. May be worth pickin up just to part it out. Or save some bits to have spares for your complete boat!

Rules: No one sails for free. Boats cost money.
What is your budget in time and money?

I agree the complete $1000-$1500 80's boat would be best.

Otherwise, $150 for solid hulls (maybe a small 12" x 12" soft spot) and trailer would be a bargain. Then you could buy a $400-$800 complete boat with soft hulls and make one good boat.

Adding full priced new/used parts at this would be too expensive.
Used prices:
$400 Mast
$200 Rigging
$400 Sails
$100 Boom
$200 Blocks
$200 Trapezes
This is a grand total of $1500

If you have the space to keep a boat and the time, grab it.

Exactly. Trailer aside, it really comes down to the condition of the hulls. If they're good, I's grab them. Even if the trailer is junk you can get money for it at the scrap yard.

Thanks for the advise. Are there years of production I want to avoid? I recall there were some bad years for the 18's when Coleman(?) owned them. Does this apply the 16's as well? Also, like a used car each one stands on it's own, but how old is too old?
