I just finished repairing a h-16, 70's model. The mast tang has only one hole in it. Would it be safe to attach the shrouds, forestay, and the trap wires to this one shackle? Should I replace the tang with a 3 hole style?

Thanks,
hopsing

well i know it would be safer to have the 3 hole style tang, but the 14s i know were originally rigged with all 5 wires on one shackle, and althought the 16 rig is more powerful, i think for recreational sailing it shouldnt be much of a problem. still, i would feel safer with the other tang

Whichever way you go make sure and safety wire everything. It's a big surprise when a shackle comes undone and you either end up in the drink or your mast falls down.

The original 16 has all five wires on the bow of the shackle.

If you have a second trapeze, the wires for that go on the pin of the shackle on either side of the mast tang.

Also, check for cracking on the tang. Quite a few older 16's I see have small cracks. If so, change it to the 3hole.

I don't quite understand that. Could you provide a pic? I bought a set of trapeze wires to replace one that had frayed, when I went to replace it, it turns out someone had added a loop to the frayed wire and extending a second loop to hang the second traps from. Of course it was the modified wire that was deteriorated so now I don't know how to hang two good sets. Thanks.
