New rudder pin bushings dont fit!!

Hi, I've had my 1987 H16 for a month now, updating and making repairs etc and bought a set of rudder bushings.
The castings had some old cracked bushings in them already and need to replace.
The thing is that after removing the old bushing the new ones are too small. The castings apparently were drilled with a 1/2" drill bit when the old bushing were installed which have a larger OD.

So basically instead of having 7/16" hole like new bushings require, castings have a 1/2" hole!

Where can I find bushings that will fit...1/2"OD???

Ok, I found a solution!
Ill make inserts to take the 1/2"=.5 holes in the castings down to 7/16"!!

At www.onlinemetals.com I found a alum tube with .5 OD and .43 ID...
To use the new hobie rudder pin bushings we should drill our castings to 7/16"=0.4375
My castings have a 1/2" hole so the .5 OD tube will fit snug with epoxy to bond it and the .43 ID of the tube will be drilled with a 7/16" drill bit to make it 7/16"=.4375. Theres only a .0075 diff from the ID of the tube inserts Ill install and the recommended drilling to use the hobie rudder pin bushings.

One last question....where exactly on the rudder castings are the bushings supposed to be installed??

At the center hinge of the casting (fat part) or at the lower and upper tab/hinge sections?

It might be easier to make new bushings out of Delrin that will fit in the lager holes. Check here for material:

I did order the inserts this morning second day air...I ordered one s/s one 6061 alum and one bronze all the same size .5"OD x .43"ID x 12" long, just to see which one works best, and is easier to drill to .4375" ID.

Tried the www.mcmcaster.com but doesnt seem to direct me to any page related to plastic parts etc its just like a web search engine...

Any corrections to this web address?

I also ordered from ebay a rod of black derlin .5" diameter x 12" long,, just in case its a better option....and ill drill the center with a 7/16" drill bit on a drill press to fit the hobie bushings in, or I may only drill to 3/8" and use the pins with no bushing...and expoxy the derlin inserts in the casting...havent decided yet....have a few options

now with so many plastins available nylon, derlin, teflon etc etc etc which should I choose for the inserts????

One that will bond with epoxy and not melt or slip off like teflon???

I wouldn't worry about bonding to epoxy. The bushings will stay in place as part of the rudder assembly.

I would use either Delrin (easily machnineable and very wear resistant) or UHMW - Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethelene. Extreamly wear resistant, and slippery, but slightly harder to machine, especially with hand tools.

Some tips when machining plastic. Don't take your time drilling holes. As the pastic heats it will grow. When it cools it will shrink back down. But, if you removed material when it was expanded it will not be correct when it cools.

You may even be able to order tubing at the correct size.

I did order from mcmaster.com both nylon and polyethelene tubbing of 1/2"OD x 7/16"ID and also 1/2"OD x 3/8"ID that way I dont have to drill for the 3/8 pin or 7/16 bushings...and can also decide to use them hobie bushings or not.
Also have two types of plastics nylon and poly....
