I recently picked up a Hobie 16, have not sailed one in years, I was thinking of selling it and getting a family friendly Hobie Getaway. What do you think, my 13 year old and 11 year old sail with me. I sail in New Jersey mostly the Barnegat Bay. How are the Getaways vs the 16? Thanks

If you go camping at a campsite with showers and toilets go for the Getaway.
If you camp in the middle of nowhere and use solar showers and such go for the 16.

This is a very general rule, meant to be used liberally.

Also if your kids are really good sailors and know how to rig a thing or two go for the 16.

I currently own a Hobie 16 and I sail it with my 13yr old. from my understanding the getaway is a more forgiving boat, easier to sail, but also not quite as exciting in certain conditions. Personally I would have been happy with a getaway, but I only paid 500 for my 16 so obviously that was the boat to get!!

It depends on the kids. If they are speed junkies, and don't mind getting wet on a nice day at the lake, keep the H16!

If they really aren't into it and would rather be watching TV, and can't stand the idea of falling into the yucky lake water, you will all be better off with the Getaway.

If you plan to sail much with 3 or 4 on the boat get the getaway.
