Ok, few weeks ago I picked up my 88 H16. As I was rolling up the Main I realized I needed to remove the last 2 battens. So, I pulled them out. Next thing I know I am on the ground crying like a baby with about 1000 little tiny splinters in my hands. OK, not really. But there were splinters in my finger tips.

Is there anything that can be done about this? Sand Lightly and then spray with a clear coat of Poly???

My old 14 battens were shedding...I sanded light and sprayed em with white krylon fusion paint. Not sure how long it will hold up...boats gone.

The hobie catalog has shrink wrap you can put over your battens. I've used them before on my previous hobie and they really helpd. Probably not a great idea if you race.

I sanded those areas on the top battens that were tapered at the factory and applied Minwax Polycrylic, it's what I had sitting on the shelf. It seemed to do the trick, eliminated splinters and put on a nice shine which I'm sure reduces any chafing inside the batten pocket. I also fold my main in half and start rolling from the middle batten, the head ends up in the middle of the boom and all the battens line up nicely. When rigging up, just hook up the halyard, insert the head in the luff track and everything unrolls itself on its way up.
