Yeah, why not, it's a "free country" !
Realize that your H16 sails, standing rigging, etc. will not work.
Also, you will probably be banned from any 'real' racing events.
But if you work out all the stuff you could sail the boat- which is probably most important.
(Realistically, if you have an H16 you should probably just find an H16 mast in good shape... unless you have H14 sail, etc. and are ready to spend the time.)

With what you have, why not try?

You'll lose about 4 feet of mast, and a bit of boom and sail area. H-16 really needs a jib to tack, so hopefully you have a jib. Stays will probably have to be replaced, as the length isn't going to match. I doubt you'll find the right size stays off the shelf. The helm on your boat is going to change (probably more lee helm) as the center of the sail moves forward with the smaller sails. If you add trapeze wires, the pull on the mast will be a bit lower then normal on an H-16, and you'll probably have more leverage.

You'll under-perform in light and moderate winds, but will be able to handle heavier winds a bit easier (less sail area). It would be a nice cruiser, but you wouldn't be the fastest boat in town.

It's probably going to take a bit of experimenting on the setup. Mast rake will produce some interesting affects. And the foot or so less in the bow will change the jib angle a bit. It will be interesting to hear exactly how this works out.

Or you could try trading the H-14 for H-16 stuff.

Best of luck,

Keep in mind that the H14 mast cross-section is a lot smaller than the H16. If you overload it by putting it on the larger H16 and sailing in high wind (with crew??) there is potential to snap the mast.

I think you're better off using the proper H16 mast/rig that was designed for the boat. The boat will sail better and and be more enjoyable and will probably end up costing you less in the long run.

Sometimes a idea is not a good idea
This is one of them
Get some parts and get your 16 up and running
Used parts are cheap and sometimes free
Remember this is the Great Hobie 16 and it should be treated as such
