If you've got an all-metal mast, the halyard should be half wire / half rope.
If you have a Comptip mast, the halyard is almost all line with about 18" of wire at the end that attaches to the mainsail's head.
On both types of halyards, there is a metal bead pressed on the wire that engages the latch when the sail is fully raised. It's important to do this since the cleats on the mast are not meant to carry the load of the sail, only to stow the halyard away when it's been latched.
