1979 Hobie 16

I've not sailed since '63 - and then only a little one man surfborard type. I now have a 1979 Hobie 16 but cannot figure out how to string the jib sheets - if that is the proper phrase. Is there an illustration somewhere I can access? It looks like all the original fittings etc. are on it. Thanks for any help.

I doubt it's any different than mine... Let me take a stab at explaining it for you. I can take some pictures tomorrow for you.

There are 4 places in which the jib is attached to things.

1. to the bridle
2. to the jib halyard
3. plastic part clips to the forestay
4. to the jib sheet

A good purchase would be the book: Catamaran sailing: from start to finish. I picked it up right after I bought my boat and it has been a great help. Majority of the pictures in the book showing specific catamaran things are with hobie 16's.. so it helps us Hobie owners quite a bit. If you get it, the jib rigging pictures are on page 70. I picked the book up from amazon.com Phil Berman is the author, easily worth the $16...

Thanks. It's the jib sheet that I can't figure out. In particular the two pullies. I saw a pic on another thread where one pully seems to be attached to the jib but can't quite make it out.

I can take a picture of mine this afternoon and post up here later tonight...

If you follow my blue jibsheet you will see the 2 blocks hanging there just below the starboard cleat.

I was just looking at your boat on the other thread. Looks like mine is a bit different set up. I'll post a pic when I find my camera. My '79 was in the woods for a few years.

Definitely different than on my '82... but it looks similar in how it works. It just has the cleat on the traveler instead of having it mounted to the frame more towards the center. Looks like it only has one block instead of two...

Here is how it looks on mine:

I have two blocks - the other one is fastened to the jib (not shown). I'll try to put some time into it tomorrow. Instead of two ropes (or sheets) like you have, it seems like they had it strung with only one rope. I'm not sure yet if that is correct or maybe one rope was lost along the way.Thanks a lot.

Actually it is just one rope and I think it will work the same on yours.

Look closely at the top picture I posted above...

It starts out on the port side, the start of the jibsheet is tied to the top of port side jib traveler and is then run out to the block that attaches to the clew of the jib. The shackle that attaches to the jib should have 2 blocks on it, one for each side. After you run the line through the port side block, it then runs back to the portside traveler and then to the port side jib cleat. Your traveler and clean being one unit, I would imagine it works the same.

After it runs through that cleat, it then runs across the width of the trampoline but behind the mast to the starboard cleat. It would then go through the block on the traveler and out to the block that attaches to the jib and then finally back to the top of the starboard traveler where it would be tied off.

Seeing the pictures of your older setup, I'm just not sure where you would tie the line off.. is there a post to loop it around on the top?

Does the line easily come uncleated and move freely in and out or is the knot in the way? You may want to move that post to a higher position... the line is tied around it right?

Seems to work fine. Won't really know til I'm in panic mode on a jibe.

That looks like a "up to cleat/down to uncleat" setup, so you should be fine, but if it were me, I'd tie the line around that pin rather than just relying on it being pinched under it...
