Hello I just bought an old Hobie 16 that needs a bunch of work and some parts. I've never rigged one off these before so not sure exactly what i am missing yet. Looks like I need at least a new main sail (old one sat outside for years and got ruined) and whatever parts it take to connect the boom to the mast.
I found a main sail and boom from a 17 listed locally for $100. Looks like a good price to me and would be killing to birds with one stone. Just wondering if this will fit or not. Thanks for your help

I am going to say no, but someone like Matt Bounds or Matt Miller can answer this better.

If interested, I have a set of Sails (Main is in Fair Condition), (Jib, not matching, It is a Mylar Jib that is de-laminating but would still work) if your interested. $200 plus shipping.

16 Main is about 10 shorter luff and 13" longer in the foot.

Could work if you add a boom gooseneck fitting. Sheeting angle might be off... not sure.

You could make it work, but it would be a real bastard design.

The 17 main's tack is an acute angle, whereas the 16's is a near right angle.

The 17's boom is designed to attach at the base of the mast, whereas the 16's attaches about 18" up.

A 17's sail is made of a mylar/dacron taffeta that has a much shorter lifespan than a 16's all-dacron sail. If you're paying $100 for a sail and a boom - then the sail is worth $0. It's shot (delaminated).

The sheeting angle would be all wrong, too.

You'll spend more time and $ in little bits to make this work than to just find a correct set of sails and a boom that's made for the boat to begin with.

Wow didn't think they would be that different. Glad I asked. Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'll keep looking.
