I am not sure that blue boat is an 86. do not see the adjuster bolt on upper rudder housing....... Plus the frame being all silver.

Hm I don't know then, might not be buying it though cause of the mast being available now for less, just need a trailer and a toy box with my mini being unable to hold the sails

Dont get in too big of rush. That blue boat is worth about 600$ TOPS imho.
Keep your eyes on craigslist good deals will turn up!
Also sniff around your local fleets as sometimes boats get sold unadvertised!

Well is this looking like a good deal right now?

That blue boat is pre-1980 or it would have black anodized aluminum.
Like I said I would keep shopping. The more you research and the more boats you look at the better off you will be!
Re-gelled and fugly bottom paint I would not touch that thing unless someone gave it to me.
Mast for 600$ no thanks I can get a whole boat for that.
I would not stress over a comp tip right away. I doubt you will get turned away from any races being a new sailor with an aluminum mast.

Not necessarily. I owned an '84 (bought in the fall of '83) that had clear anodizing. Black anodizing didn't become standard until the mid-'80s.

And black anodizing was an option as early as 1976.

He said it'd be way less than $600 in a later email and including all the parts still less than that. Seems like some people are encouraging getting the 2008 right now while there's a good deal and others are saying to wait. And if I got the 2008 I'd probably grab that mast because it costs the same amount as a comptip alone.

Oooops! Did not know that! Good to know!

I would look that 08 over very carefully. If it got hammered in the hurricane it may have some battle wounds!

Well I can't get the 2008, it's too much money short and simple and can't pay more than $2000 for everything, just how it is. I'll probably end up getting boat #1 with it's disliked hull paint and all.

A seller on Craigslist has a comptip mast from a boat that won the woman's nationals for $600 so maybe I could get that eventually just for practice and to be able to get into regattas maybe.

Also over time I'll probably just put money away gradually to save up for a better newer or new boat.

Or if I'm lucky I'll find a good deal locally, does anyone know where people that are using and potentially selling hobies on/near Long Island?
Thanks for the feedback all.

There is definitely a slight risk that the 2008 has other damage. You really should look it over first. Maybe you can arrange to see it, and just be prepared to buy it if it checks out.

Go join the local club and hitch rides. Keep looking and don't settle. I started looking a year ago and finally found one in November. Paid $1000 for my 88, $600 for newer sails and $550 for new Hobie Mesh Tramp plus some odds and ends. I have a great boat for about what your limit is.

Already in a club right now sailing 420s every weekday. Just wanted to get into this also to do some outside club time sailing. Seems like the fall and spring are prime time selling times though am I right?

And how would your boat compare to the one I'm looking at also?

Image. It's got some small cracks in gel coat on side. Probably from being moored at a dock. Otherwise in excellent shape.
