You're right @ MBounds. It was a stretch and in the end it wouldn't have been worth the shipping for almost any boat that's not within a few hundred miles and I'd be better just buying a new boat for that price.

I contacted Rob tonight and I'll let you all know the response I get.

One of the first replies I got to this was to talk to the members of the fleet in New Jersey. They have a classified sections on their website but like you said in the fleet itself there could be boats for sale, but I'm really unsure who I should contact to inquire about those. Any ideas?
Thanks for all the feedback really appreciate it.

Update: all 3 nearby dealers said to check with fleet 250 and they don't have used race ready boats for sale and/or know of any but will contact me about them. Scott Hardy said to look out basically for all the things you all pointed out in a older boat and the newer ones to look at are the ones made within the past 10 years. Still haven't heard back from Rob yet.

Well I reached out to all my local dealers about it to no avail until this today, the seller was surprised at how fast someone called cause it hasn't even been listed yet. You guys have been great and all the ideas are really coming together, also when I called him he was really happy when I said I'm sailing in JSA on 420s.

James,

This might be a lead for you. In the second paragraph he is selling a Hobie 16.

Todd Stevens

Hi,

I have a 1998 minimum weight Hobie 16 for sale with trailer. The boat was raced by me for four seasons and then it was used as our river boat. Since 02 it has been used no more than 10 hours (yes that's hours) a year. Pat & I would go out for about an hour and then have lunch at the marina. I used an old solid mast and old sails when we went out. The comptip mast and sails have not seen the light of day since 02. During the winter the boat was kept in a heated garage. It is in good shape, but not sure how much more life the tramp has since it was out from June to October each year. It would be a great starter boat for someone getting into the sport and if reglued and riveted I believe it would be competitive. The trailer is a galvanized Highlander in pretty good shape. I put on new tires and rims, lights and wiring, rear rollers, safety chains and the front coupling. It needs a new winch and some of the U bolts replaced. Had the bearings checked out and the mechanic said they were fine. Not in a big hurry to sell this boat, because I would like to see it stay in the division and be raced.
Price is $3500 for boat and trailer. If the boat will be raced in the division or purchased by a youth sailor the price is negotiable.

Haha yeah seems awesome! What should I ask for pictures of on it and look for in it? And questions I should ask about it? And does anyone know of the owner Jim Glanden?

I've personally known Jim Glanden for longer than I can remember - at least 30 years. You couldn't find a more honest, reliable guy. He's committed to getting new people, especially youths, into the sport.

He's owned Hobies for longer than most of you have been alive. His first new 16 had sail # 335 - and that was an original, sequential sail number. He races Waves, 16s and 17s. He is the current Hobie Wave North American Champion.

You don't need pictures. The boat is exactly as described.

That's Jim and his all-star crew, Nikki LaPorta.

Do you know the reason for selling the boat? Did he buy a new one that's in those pictures? And that's impressive, I'm sure I can count on it being a good boat then especially being taken care of by someone like him. Thanks for all the info.

Jim owns several (many) boats. His wife, who used to sail with him, has MS and her mobility has been slowly declining. My guess is that he's trying to "thin the herd" a bit since she can't sail with him anymore. No reason to have a 16 at his river house when she can't sail with him, and Jim hates to see a good boat sit unused.

Sorry to hear about that. Didn't know that and makes sense. Do you know anything about the lines and rigging on it? He said the trapeze system will be need to be replaced so that's still not a concern as far as how much I'll need to put into it. I have finals right now so I'll try to see it in 2 weeks. He's in Jersey right?

I don't know any of the specifics on that particular boat. I do know that Jim will treat you right. I'm not sure where he keeps the boat, but he lives in northern Delaware (Newark).

I sent him an e-mail to let him know you're interested.

It'll be gone in two weeks. You need to pull the trigger on this one now. Talk to him and offer to send him a deposit to hold it until you can see it.

Delaware isn't too far I travel to Vermont every weekend in the winter so it's even shorter. I'll work on the deposit and hopefully be set in stone tomorrow on it.

When are regattas typically held also for H16s?

Thanks for the schedule I probably won't be in many this year but hopefully the next. How is the around Staten Island regatta or what regatta would you recommend as a beginner? The Staten Island one seems rather long but what do I know.
