Post subject:  Hull repair - something loose inside?

After 25+ years I once again own a H16 :-) This claimed 84 model needs a bottom job... so bought all the epoxy, glass, etc. Have one 4" crack in the bottom of the hull two feet behind the front post. Upon drilling a couple holes to open it a bit, I was happy to find the foam sandwich does not go to the bottom of the hull. When the crack is probed, however, by pushing a small 3" screw driver blade up into the hull I am finding something loose inside about two inches above and along the length of the crack. I cannot see through the crack into the hull but it feels fairly big. Any clue what this may be? I hope to repair the crack from the bottom but this loose item makes think top level access may be required. Thanks.

Sand bag placed in there by an angry employee on a late Friday afternoon.

No, actually it is probably the floatation block of foam.

Sounds to me like a loose shoe....

The post goes down inside the hull, and 'sits' inside a 'shoe' which is glassed to the bottom of the hull. In other words, the shoe is the bottom support of the post.

With age...sometimes that shoe will work it's way loose. Search the Forum for repair options.... which usually involve an incision (often from the top by cutting a porthole), and re-glassing the shoe.

I agree, loose pylon shoe. The crack in the hull near the pylon is a dead giveaway. Download the Sept/Oct 2009 Hotline. It has a very good explanation of what is going on and how to repair it.

I put a photo of what the shoe looks like in a facebook album. If Image itself does not show up, follow link at bottom.

Thanks all for the responses. Upon opening the cracked area to patch with fiber cloth and epoxy, I could see it the loose object was the flotation foam. I read somewhere that this foam is intended to be loose.
