Hi guys, I'm a new member here but have been lurking for a while. I am fixing up a 1981 H16 and wanted to know what kind of rope you guys recommended for the halyards and mainsheet? I am looking for something nice but not to expensive as I dont plan on racing it yet. |

The only rope I've heard of on any ship is the rope to ring the ship's bell. Mostly, they are called lines or sheets.... For main sheet and jib sheet, I can heartily recommend Robbline... available from your Hobie dealer, see also page 26 of the current catalogue.... 5 mm for jib... 8mm for main. Soft on the hands, floats when wet.... ask around... there are cheaper solutions, however you'll be grateful after each sail that you chose well. The Cadillac of halyards is Amsteel, which some folks find too pricey. Any super low stretch line will do. |

Thanks for the reply, sorry about the use of the word rope, Ive become too acustomed to confusing nonsailing people (new to hobie but have been sailing for a while now), thanks for the recomendation, The main one i was looking at is NE Salsa but wanted some recomdations before I purchased something |

Salsa is a GREAT choice for the main sheet. You will LOVE it. I use it on my boat and should I ever end up with a different ride it will be coming with me or more will be purchased. Very easy to hold and it zips right through the blocks when required. |

Oh. And don't fear the "R" word. I felt the same as you for some time. I didn't want to race, I wanted to sail for fun. The first time around the marks and I was hooked! The hobie racers are a great bunch of people, and racing adds a fun challenge to what it really means to be fast adding immense depth to an already exciting and fun ride! |

My understanding is rope is "rope" when it's on a spool. When it's cut to length for a specific purpose on a boat is when it becomes a "line" or a "sheet". |

I was once keelhauled for using the word "rope" instead of "line." The quality of the rope you are going to use is definately dependant on how you want to sail. With extensive cruising and racing experience, there will be a difference. If you are just looking for something that will work for the periodic evening and also weekends, go with a cheap line you'll fined off of eBay. I purchased some inexpensive line marked as halyard (or sheet) line off eBay for super cheap and am quite content with its performance - in place are jib halyard, tramp line, and jib sheet. If you are looking for something to race with or that will have almost no stretch for extended periods, then definately spend a few bucks extra for the quality. |
