How bad is it if a mast step isn't securely threaded onto the striker rod ? The thread on the mast step is pretty worn out from being forced off a striker rod it was corroded onto. What would happen if i epoxied / JB welded them into place used the jack, riveted it in and went sailing ? Would the striker rod push up through the mast step and mean that the mast was sitting on top of the striker rod and a rapidly disintegrating plastic chip ?

Any known repairs here or do have to get a new mast step ?

Why wouldn't you just go ahead and replace it? Sailing with a potential equipment failure is just crazy, especially anything related to the mast.

Because I'm cheap !! I really can't imagine causing a life threatening problem if the striker rod pushed through a bit but it could ruin a day on the water and the mast base.

I think that if I managed to helicoil the insert of the step it would be satisfactory, I was wondering if anybody has tried this or may have the specs of the thread on the striker post that I am trying to match.
